Agate is a common rock formation, consisting of chalcedony and quartz as its primary components, & consisting of a wide variety of colours. Agates are primarily formed within volcanic and metamorphic rocks.

 The ornamental use of agate dates back to Ancient Greece in assorted jewellery and in the seal stones of Greek warriors.

Agate is one of the most common materials used in the art of hardstone carving, and has been recovered at a number of ancient sites, indicating its widespread use in the ancient world.
